Counseling Psychology Program (PSE)

Degree Programs

The Counseling Psychology Program includes: (a) a doctoral program, which awards a Ph.D. degree, and (b) a master's program, which awards an M.Ed. (offers two tracks from which to select: school or community/agency).

The Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology has full accreditation by the American Psychological Association. Temple University's Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology was one of the earliest programs in the country to receive APA approval. The doctoral program also is accepted by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology and the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. The program is a full-time day program of three years of study on campus, followed by a year-long full-time internship. [Note: the Doctoral Program is not currently accepting applications.]

The Master's Program (60 credit hours) can be completed full-time or part-time. The full-time program takes two years and the part-time program takes three years. Students choose a track soon after acceptance into the program. One track is designed to prepare students for Pennsylvania Certification as an elementary school counselor or a secondary school counselor. The other track is designed to prepare students for work in community mental health agencies.

The National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approves the State Certification Program and the Master’s Program in Counseling Psychology. The Pennsylvania State Department of Education has given approval for the master’s program, which provides State Certification in Counseling Psychology.

In general, the Program enrolls about 50 doctoral students and 80 master's students at any given time.
