Program Description:

The Urban Education Masters Program at Temple University serves school-based educators seeking to enhance their understanding of subjects such as social theory, national education policy, urban education reform, and the history of urban education. Courses generally familiarize students with research methodology and include opportunities to conduct research and do field-based study. The program also addresses the needs of professionals involved in community-based education, adult literacy, community organizing, community development, afterschool programs and family centers.

Program Requirements:

The M.Ed. requires a minimum of 30 credit hours (33 if a thesis is written) and a comprehensive examination. Students also complete a master’s project or write a master’s thesis. Students may enroll full time or part time.

Required Core Courses:

The program requires a foundation sequence of four courses in Urban Education. Three courses are selected from the following offerings:

  • Urban Education 5401 (400): Introduction to Urban Schools
  • Urban Education 5501 (500): Issues in Urban Education
  • Urban Education 8602 (600): Theory Seminar in Urban Education
  • Urban Education 5565 (650): Historical Context of Urban Education
  • ED ADM 5063 (630): Educational Reform

With the assistance of an advisor, students select a fourth course from relevant offerings in Geography and Urban Studies.

Students must select an area of specialization in Educational Policy Studies, Foundations in Urban Education, School-Community Partnerships or Teaching in Urban Schools and take appropriate courses in their specialization. One research methods course is also required as well as an internship or independent research course.

Admissions Requirements:

Applicants must submit:

  • A completed Graduate School Online Application;
  • A resume
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and graduate schools attended
  • GRE scores (taken within the last 5 years)
  • Two letters of recommendation
