The Post Baccalaureate Certification Program allows students and working professionals who hold undergraduate degrees in fields outside of education to earn Intern and Instructional I Certificates in the State of Pennsylvania. The program does not award students the Master of Education degree. Students who want teacher certification and the Master of Education degree should apply to the Graduate Certification Program.
Specialties within the Post Baccalaureate Certification Program include:
Most students complete the program as part timers in about two years. Full time enrollment is also available and requires about one year to complete. Except for the semester of Supervised Teaching and some second – summer session courses, all classes are available in the evenings. The length of the program is between 21 and 24 semester hours, depending on the student’s teaching specialty. One semester of full-time supervised teaching is required. There is no required comprehensive examination.
Students may earn no more than two grades of B- quality, nor more than one F, beginning with the semester during which they apply to the Program. Students must achieve at least a 3.0 grade point average to graduate.
Applications are required and are available from the CITE Department. Please note that the application to the Post-Baccalaureate program does not require a formal application to the Graduate School of Temple University since you are not applying to a degree program. Do not apply to the Graduate School if you are interested only in the Post-Baccalaureate program.
Applicants are expected to have a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. However, students may qualify for an exception to this policy by presenting 9 credits of graduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
A completed application will include:
Applicants must submit all application materials to the CITE Department:
Emily Meyers
1301 Cecil B. Moore Avenue
Ritter Hall 359
Philadelphia, PA 19122-6091
All applicants must have at least six undergraduate credits in mathematics and at least six undergraduate credits in English Composition and English Literature combined to be considered for admission. Individual specialties have additional requirements.
Applications are welcome throughout the year. Once an application is complete (i.e., all required materials are received in the department) you can expect to receive a decision within 30 days (excluding summer). While we have a rolling admission policy, it is suggested that your application be complete no later than May 1 for a fall semester decision and November 15 for a spring semester decision.
